What is Minoxidil?
Minoxidil was first created as a blood pressure medication, but patients began to notice they were growing more hair! With a change of direction, doctors started prescribing minoxidil as a hair loss treatment that promotes a full, healthy head of hair. Minoxidil 5% awakens the scalp area—specifically the deadened hair follicles—exerting maximum hair growth on the crown of the head in men (vertex, shown below).
How does Minoxidil work?
Minoxidil topical solution is used to stimulate hair growth in people who are balding. It seems to exert its maximum effect at the crown of the head. The exact way that minoxidil works is not known, but it may stimulate hair growth by improving the blood supply to the hair follicles. Researchers conducted an observational study in 393 men with androgenetic alopecia for the duration of 48 weeks. The study evaluated the effectiveness of minoxidil 5% topical solution compared to 2% minoxidil in stopping hair loss and stimulating new hair growth. At the end of the observational study, the researchers reported that 5% topical minoxidil increased hair growth in men 45% more than the patients that used 2% minoxidil, concluding that minoxidil is a very effective hair growth treatment.[1]
